Deshabandu Lion Dr. (Eng.) W.M.D. Walisundara is the current chairman of Institute of Incorporated Engineers Sri Lanka-Central Province Branch (IIESL-CPB) and the current chairman of the National Construction Association of Sri Lanka- Central Province Branch. He was appointed the 10th chairperson of the IIESL-CPB in November 2020. He was the former General Secretary from 2013 to 2018, Vice Chairman from 2018 to 2020 of IIESL CPB. Not only that he is an advisor of NDES Alumni Kandurata Chapter, but also he won the award for the Best facilitator of the year IIESL-CPB in 2018.
He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, Fellow Member of IIESL, Surveyor holding 38 years’ experience in the field of civil engineering construction. During his career, he was assigned to various types of construction work where he has accumulated a wealth of experience for the fields of Dam construction, Road Construction, Tunnel Works, Harbor Construction, Water Supply and Sewerage, Building Construction, Bridge Construction, and Electricity Switchyards.
Dr. (Eng.) W.M.D. Walisundara completed his primary education at Sri Dheerananda Vidyalaya Pilimatalawa and secondary education at the Peradeniya Central college. Then he joined the National Apprenticeship Board, Sri Lanka Engineering Institute, the University of Moratuwa for his higher education in Civil Engineering earned the status of Special Engineering Apprenticeship in 1986. He received his Graduate/post-graduate degrees with Institute of Civil Engineers UK, MBA in Project Management from the Bampton International University of Canada. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer accredited by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
He has worked for many leading engineering giants such as Eng. Seng Engineering Pte Ltd of Singapore, Hazama Kumagai JV of Japan, Penta Ocean Construction Co. Ltd of Japan, Kumagai Kukdong Astaldi Jv of Japan and Italy, Taisei Corporation of Japan and Maeda Nishimatsu JV of Japan locally and internationally.
In addition to his professional career, he is attached to the social bodies and also has won many awards. He is the Administrative Director of Central Province for Human Rights Organization of Sri Lanka, Treasurer of Sinhala Traders and Professionals Association of Yatinuwara Electorate, Justice of Peace (Whole Island). He joined to the world largest social service organization, Lions Clubs International District 306 C1 in 2013 with lion’s club of Pilimatalawa and became as the Charter Secretary of lions’ club of Kiribathkumbura in 2014. He was the Centennial Club President of same club for 2016/2017. He was promoted as a Zone Chairman in 2017/2018, Regional Chairman in 2018/2019.
Deputy Cabinet Secretary (Legacy Project Consultant) in 2019/2020, Global Service Team Leader and additional Cabinet Secretary for 2020/2021 under District 306C1.
His social services have earned him the status of “Deshabandu Lankaputra” National Award for social service, Vishwa Keerthi award for Human Rights Activities. Moreover, He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Mohanlal Sukaldia University of India.
He is one of the Charter Members and Charter Secretary of Senkadagala Toastmaster’s Club as well.
While some would consider him more of an entrepreneur than an engineer. Presently, he is the Chairman/Managing Director at DYNAMIC CONSTRUCTIONS INTERNATIONAL (PVT) LTD. He won the Construction Excellence Award in 2017 from National Construction Association of Sri Lanka.
He has made an enormous contribution to the IIESL-CPB. He continues his noble contribution as a civic minded individual to the society.
Dr. (Eng.) WMD Walisundara is a living example for the quote made by a well-known philanthropist Vince Lombardi who said
“Leaders are made; they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile”.
